NSSBA Committees

NSSBA Committees are established to provide insight, advice and recommendations on items pertaining to NSSBA's services, programs and policies. The Committees are comprised of school board representatives, NSSBA partners and stakeholders to create a unified voice and consistent goals and objectives.

Audit

The purpose of the Audit Committee is to assist the Board of Directors in monitoring and maintaining internal controls over its operations. The Committee reviews the audit report,   the management response to the report, and monitors corrective and other actions taken by   NSSBA in response to the report and any other report findings or recommendations. When an audit is to take place, the Committee will oversee the engagement of the external auditors including reviewing the plan for the annual audit and the audit results with the auditors. The Audit Committee strives to ensure open communication among the external auditors, management and the Board.

Central Purchasing

As part of the shared services initiative, NSSBA provides central purchasing as a cost saving program for member boards. The Central Purchasing Committee considers items which might be purchased in quantity to save boards money. They are to monitor the effectiveness of goods and services purchases and undertake problem-solving measures if required.

Communications

The Communications Committee guides the implementation of the Association's communications strategy through advice and counsel. The Committee monitors the strategic planning process, aims to enhance and promote effective communications, and promotes a greater public awareness of NSSBA. The Communications Committee also recommends a communications budget, monitors that budget and reports committee deliberations and recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Education

The Education Committee monitors and reviews the effectiveness of existing educational programs in our province. The Committee fosters and supports innovation in the school system, recommends professional development for school boards and school board members, develops and reviews model education policies, and provides valuable insight on proposals received from the Department of Education and other stakeholders of NSSBA. It is then the Education Committee's responsibility to report Committee deliberations and recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Finance

This committee is responsible to uphold, support and direct the approved NSSBA budget. Relative to the approved budget, the Finance Committee monitors the organization's expenditures to develop and recommend to the Board of Directors the annual budget, membership dues and fees.

Leaders Advisory

The Leaders Advisory Committee is comprised of 18 members. It is chaired by the President of t NSSBA, and involved NSSBA's executive team, the, eight school board chairs, and   superintendents. The Committee provides an opportunity for the Board of Directors to keep the member boards informed and updated on current priorities, issues, activities and actions of NSSBA. This provides a forum to receive input and feedback directly from the leadership portion of the member school boards and assists the Board of Directors with additional insight and advice on substantive issues facing the School Board System.

Members' Employees Benefits

One of the benefits programs offered by NSSBA through its shared services initiative is the Members' Employees Benefits. The Members' Employees Benefits Committee governs the provision of benefits for the non-teaching employees of school boards in the province and ensures that insurers, consultants and administrators are meeting the needs of its members.

MOU

In October 2007, the Department of Education and the Nova Scotia School Boards Association entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with agreed upon Guiding Principles. The agreement was struck to ensure a strong working relationship between the department and school boards. The MOU Committee works to create an effective relationship between the Province and school boards by participating in regular ongoing consultations, two-way communication, and by resolving differences through direct dialogue and discussion.

Nominations

At least two months before the Annual General Meeting, the Board of Directors appoints a nominations committee as stated in the NSSBA by-laws. The Committee prepares for the election of the executive officers, which takes place at the AGM each year, by calling for nominations from member boards for offices of the Association.

Pension Trustees

The Pension Trustees Committee manages the business, property and affairs of the NSSBA pension plan. The Committee's responsibilities include investment management, third party administration as well as actuaries plan design and funding on behalf of the Board of Directors.

Resolutions

Established through the NSSBA by-laws, the Resolutions Committee prepares for debate of issues and the elections that take place at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) each year. The overall contribution made by the Committee is in simplifying and enhancing informed and responsible decisions related to the AGM resolutions.
